Millenia:
What do you think you're doing!? // “ЧЕРТ ВОЗЬМИ, ЧТО ТЫ ДЕЛАЕШЬ!?”
What do you mean by Dark One? // “КАК ЭТО, ИСЧАДИЕ АДА!?”

(священник стреляет в Миллению файрболлом, она легко отбивает его рукой).

Ryudo:
Huh. She has a fair hand with magic. // “А. ОНА ХОРОШО ЗНАЕТ      МАГИЮ.”
// へえ かわいい顔して なかなかやるじゃんか! // Яндекс Переводчик: эй, у тебя красивое лицо”.
// Hē kawaī kao shite nakanaka yarujan ka!

Millenia:
And other fair parts besides. // “И ЧТО-  ТО ЕЩЕ”
Tell me, do I look like a Dark One to you? // “СКАЖИ. РА3ВЕ Я ПОХОЖ НА ИСЧАДИЕ АДА?”

Huh? // А?
Just the sight of this place, disguists me. // ЭТО МЕСТО МНЕ ОТВРАТИТЕЛЬНО!
This filthy statue. //

Есть проект Grandia II Undub/Retranslation. Там вроде исправили эти неточности.

-General Notes-

I think it's important to start by saying that the original translation of Grandia II is not "bad". In fact, it is generally accurate, and in most cases could not even be noticeably improved. But, as I'm sure you will agree after reading my notes, the translation was also far from perfect, and there were some issues with it I really wanted to address. And even were that not the case, there were many places where adjustments to the script needed to be made for the English script to sync up with the timings of the Japanese audio. In any case, don't start playing this undub expecting a completely different game from the one you know. Instead, you might notice a few times where something happens slightly differently than you remember it, or that the dialog flows more smoothly (hopefully ^^) and seems more natural than it did before. The purpose of this project was to create a version of Grandia II that would allow people who only speak English to have the same experience Japanese speakers had when they first played the game. The word "better" is subjective, and I realize that for many people the English version is the version they know and love, and they don't have a desire to play anything else. If you are someone who fits that description, this patch is probably not for you. But if you are someone who found the original English version to be "cheesy" in a way that detracted from the game's central themes, I hope this patch will allow you to enjoy Grandia II the way it's creators originally intended it to be played.

-Ryudo on Women-

During the opening scene, Ryudo has the following to say about women:

"女は嫌いなんだよ 優しくされるのも…な"

The original English version translated this as:

"I don't care for her, or the kindness of strangers."

Ryudo is getting a little folksy on us already, and it's only a sign of things to come. Still, it's not a horrible translation, given what a literal translation would sound like:

"I hate women! And (the act of giving) kindness too..."

Other that the obvious problem of the line "I hate women!" being potentially interpreted as a declaration of Ryudo's sexual orientation, in English saying "And kindness too..." here sounds like a non-sequitur. He's probably referring to how the girl he encountered earlier in the scene was kind to him by defending him to her father. He's implying that he resents being given kindness out of pity.

I tried to capture this intent with my translation:

"I'm not interested, in girls or their kindness."

In this translation, Ryudo's distaste for women in general is still expressed, but in a way that emphasises how he dislikes their kind nature, and how he resents them for looking down on him. Admittedly it could still be interpreted as a comment on his sexual preference, but having him say "I'm not interested" is not nearly as strong of a statement as the literal translation. Because "I'm not interested" is a response to the previous line in which Skye says "That aside, she was rather cute, wasn't she?", the line places more emphasis on this specific girl rather than girls in general.

In my opinion, this translation is more true to both the tone and intent of the original Japanese. Even if minor changes like this could be considered nitpicking, there is a clear difference between the way the line "I hate women!" is translated, that speaks to why I wanted to re-translate this game in the first place. The original translation forcefully rewrites the line in order to make it work in English, while my re-translation tries to gracefully work around the line while still preserving it's meaning. This is a subtle but important difference, and one that motivated many of the changes I made between the two versions.

-God and the Devil vs. Granas and Valmar-

Over the course of the game, both "God"/"Granas" and "Valmar"/"the Devil" are used more or less interchangeably. But one thing I noticed as I looked at the original Japanese script, is that the English script seemed to intentionally change some (but not all) cases where their generic titles were used so that their names were used instead. For example, at the end of the opening cut-scene after finding a letter from the Church of Granas requesting him to do a job, Ryudo responds by saying:

"はあ 今度は 神様かよ…
ますます やる気が 無くなるな"

"神様" or "kami-sama" clearly translates to "God", but in the English script he says:

"So, working for Granas, huh...
Now I REALLY don't want to do it."

Although this could easily be explained as an oversight had it only happened once, it happens at several other points in the script. Arguably it doesn't change the meaning of what he said, but it is still clear that the translators made a conscious decision to tread lightly on the topic of Granas being equivalent to "God". This is understandable given the game's story, and the very real possibility they could have experienced a backlash from religious organizations after releasing it. Still, I am not generally in favor of censorship, and while this is far from the most offensive example I have seen, I saw no reason not to change the line to reflect the original Japanese more accurately:

"So, working for God, huh...
Now I really don't want to do it."

Regardless of how you feel about the religious content or messages in Grandia II, I hope you will agree that Ryudo saying he doesn't want to work for "God" has a little bit more impact than saying he doesn't want to work for "Granas". It affirms the idea that the people in Grandia II think of Granas in the same way the western world thinks about God.

-Meeting Millenia-

Right after Millenia makes her first appearance, she immediately starts causing havoc by casting destructive magic on the town. She is about to destroy the church when Ryudo says the following line in the original English script:

"Are you out of your mind?!
Or are you as sick and twisted as you look?"

This severely annoys Millenia and causes her to redirect her destructive powers toward Ryudo in a scripted battle sequence. But, when you think about it, Millenia seems to be pretty okay with playing the part of the villain in this situation. Would being called "sick and twisted" really offend her that much, or would it seem more like a compliment to her? Hmm... Well, let's look at what Ryudo said in the Japanese script:

"おまえ 胸ばっかりで
頭 足りてないんじゃないのか"

So let's see here. "おまえ" is "you", "胸" is "breast" "ばっかり" is "nothing but", "で" is "because of", "頭" is "head", "足りてない" is "insufficient"... I think I see where he's going with this. Here is the translation I used:

"Is the reason your chest is so big
to make up for your tiny brain?!"

Yea, now it's a little more clear why she got offended. This is one of the few cases I found in Grandia II of blatant censorship.

-Mirror Misdirection-

After crash landing following an unfortunate skyway related mishap, Elena also has an encounter with Millenia. But since they share the same body, this somewhat complicates things. After hearing Millenia's voice for the first time, in the original English script Elena responds by saying:

"Wh- who are you? Where are we?"

Her confusion is understandable, but Millenia responds by saying:

"Hmm... Where are we?
Hmm. Well, I'm not quite sure...
I know! See that shiny plate lying over there?"

Millenia is directing Elena to a metal plate that acts as a reflective surface so that Elena can see Millenia in the reflection. It's kind of a Quantum Leap type situation, if you've ever seen that show. The thing is, that's not really a valid response to Elena's question, is it? Elena asked where they were, but telling her where to look to see her reflection is not a logical response. In the original Japanese script, Elena asks:

"だ 誰です! どこにいるんです!"

So the thing about Japanese is, that oftentimes the subject of a sentence is only implied. It is completely grammatically correct to omit the subject of a sentence, as long as it is clear that the listener should know what you mean. This trips up a lot of people who are learning Japanese, and it takes some getting used to, but in this case there is really no excuse. The literal translation for the above sentences is:

"Wh-who are (implied subject)? Where are (implied subject)?"

Given that she is asking "who", right after hearing a mysterious voice, it is natural to assume the subject she implied would be the person that voice belongs to. So then, having established this, it also follows that the subject of the next sentence would also be the same person. That means the translation should be:

"Wh-who are you? Where are you?"

If this doesn't seem too complicated, that's because it's not. I'm not really sure how they messed this one up. The reason I'm calling attention to it, is that it's such a basic mistake, it makes me seriously question the quality control process this game was translated under. Millenia's response is:

"Where am I?
Hrm. Now that you mention it,
it's sort of complicated.
I know! See that shiny plate laying over there?"

Now her response makes perfect sense. Also, they wrote "lying" when it should have been "laying". *sigh*

-The King's Speech-

When addressing his people after the fight with the claws of Valmar, Roan gives a speech that uses a pretty high level of Japanese. I had some trouble translating it, and I'd just like to thank the people at the ManagaHelpers forum for helping me parse what was being said. Ultimately the changes I made to the translation of this speech didn't dramatically affect it's meaning, but it was important to have a more accurate translation in order to sync the speech with the text.

-Mareg's Last Words-

Before leaving the party, Mareg says the following to Tio:

"行くのだ ティオ 悩んではならん!
おまえはもうわかっている 考えてはならん!
いいな…"

In the original English version, this was translated as:

"GO! Tio, I am fine. You know how this
must end. You are thinking with...
your heart!"

The original translation takes a lot of liberties here. An accurate literal translation would be more like:

"Go Tio! (You) must not worry!
You already understand, (you) must not think!
(That is) good...(?)"

I agonized over this line more than any other line in the game. In truth, the original translation probably did capture the spirit of the moment better than what a literal translation does. The literal translation is so open ended that it could mean almost anything. I tried rewriting this line again and again to come up with something better, but in the end it always felt like I was putting words in Mareg's mouth that weren't there. Worse still, I think this line might be a callback to something earlier in the original Japanese script that may have cleared up his intent, but since I am not re-translating the whole script, nor have I even played the whole game through in Japanese, I can only guess at what that might be.

For now, here is what I settled on:

"GO, TIO! You mustn't worry about me!
Your heart already knows what will happen,
you mustn't think with your head! Right...?"

If anyone has a better translation, please let me know!

-The Final Scene-

I am not going to go too deeply into this in my notes, but during the final scene of the game with spoken dialog, there is a very real discrepancy between what was in the English script and the original Japanese script. And this discrepancy directly affects the core message of the game. If there is anyone who wants to question why I felt that I needed to re-translate the script of a game that already had a perfectly acceptable English translation, keep a copy of the original English script handy as you watch this scene. Taking liberties with a translation to make it more accessible to speakers of another language is one thing, but this is clearly a case where the translators corrupted the game's message to suit what they felt that it should be saying. This is not something I consider acceptable or even ethical when I am translating, so I have changed the translation to reflect the original creators' intentions.

Grandia II.

Такие вот дела.
